JXTA, Edge Computing and Peer-to-Peer Content
Abstract:
Models of software provision have been shifting radically over the last 20
years. The shift from desktop to network computing, client-server, thin
client, and nth-tier architechures has, in the 21st Century, evolved into
edge-computing technologies such as peer-to-peer networking. Simultaneously
many of the major software vendors are shifting from the software licensing
model to a software subscription or on-demand-service paradigm. Most CMF/S
implementors and vendors assume that content should be centrally managed and
maintained. However, developers contributing to the Sun Microsystems Open
Source project JXTA strides are exploring the boundaries of the network and
are envisioning a role for P2P in helping to manage and distribute content
in a secure and dynamic way. This talk will explore the role of
edge-of-the-network technologies in maintaining free and open access to
content.
